Why a move-out clean is different
A move-out clean is not a regular clean in an empty house. Once the furniture is gone, every scuff, dust line and forgotten corner is on display. Landlords, property managers and buyers look closely at an empty home, and the places that matter most are the ones that get skipped in day-to-day cleaning: inside cabinets and drawers, inside appliances, baseboards and window tracks.
Whether you are a renter hoping to leave on good terms or a seller getting a home ready for the next owner, use this checklist to work through the house one room at a time. Start at the top of each room and work down, so dust falls onto areas you have not cleaned yet.
Kitchen
The kitchen usually takes the longest, so start here while you still have energy.
- Empty and wipe the inside of every cabinet and drawer, including shelves and edges
- Wipe cabinet fronts, handles and the tops of upper cabinets
- Clean inside the oven, including racks and the door glass
- Clean inside the refrigerator and freezer, remove shelves and drawers to wash them, and leave the door cracked if it will be unplugged
- Clean the stovetop, burners, drip pans and range hood
- Clean inside and outside the microwave and dishwasher
- Scrub the sink and faucet, wipe counters and backsplash
- Pull out the stove and refrigerator if you can, and clean the floor and walls behind them
Bathrooms
- Scrub the tub, shower walls, doors and tracks, and remove soap scum and hard water marks
- Clean the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it
- Clean the sink, faucet, counter and mirror
- Empty and wipe the inside of vanity cabinets, drawers and medicine cabinets
- Dust the exhaust fan cover and light fixtures
- Wipe towel bars, toilet paper holders and the door, then mop the floor last
Floors, walls, windows and closets
These are the details that show most in an empty room.
- Wipe baseboards in every room, including behind doors
- Spot clean scuffs and marks on walls, and wipe light switches, outlet covers and door frames
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, air vents and the tops of door and window frames
- Clean inside windows and sills, and vacuum and wipe the window tracks
- Wipe blinds if they stay with the home
- Empty closets fully, wipe shelves and rods, and vacuum the closet floor
- Vacuum carpets thoroughly, edges included, and mop all hard floors as the final step
Garage and outdoor touches
It is easy to forget the spaces outside the living area, but they are part of the walkthrough too.
- Remove everything you are not leaving behind, including old paint and trash bags
- Sweep the garage floor and clear cobwebs from corners and the ceiling
- Sweep the porch, patio and entry, and wipe the front door
- Clear out the mailbox and any storage areas
- Leave trash and recycling bins empty, or follow the instructions from your landlord or agent
Timing your clean around the final walkthrough
The best time to clean is after everything is out of the home and before the final walkthrough. Cleaning around boxes and furniture means doing parts of the job twice. Try to plan for the last day or two before you hand over the keys, and leave a little room in case the move runs long.
If you are renting, read your lease for any move-out cleaning requirements and ask your landlord or property manager for their checklist. Take photos and a short video of each room after cleaning, with a date on them, and keep your move-in inspection report handy to compare. A clean home in good condition is one of the most practical things you can do to protect your deposit. If you are selling, ask your agent when the buyer's final walkthrough is scheduled and time the clean for just before it.
Turn off lights, close and lock windows, and do one last walk through every room before you leave.
When to hire a move-out clean
Moving is a lot of work on its own, and a full move-out clean can take a full day or more for a larger home. It often makes sense to hire help when your moving dates are tight, when you have already moved into your new place and cannot get back easily, when the home is large or has not been deep cleaned in a while, or when you are selling and want the house ready for the buyer.
MCG Clean Co offers move-in and move-out cleaning across Knox, Loudon and Blount counties. We clean the spaces that get overlooked when life is in transition: inside cabinets and drawers, baseboards, appliances, full bathrooms and floors. Because empty homes vary widely in condition, final pricing is set after a brief walkthrough. Tell us your move date and the size of the home, and we will help you plan the timing.
